” Practice of men buttoning right to left and women left to right is thought to have originated during the 15th century. Men generally dressed themselves and as most were righthanded, it was faster to button right to left. Women who could afford buttons had dressing maids and as most were right handed it was more expedient to have a mirror- image reversal. Tailors complied and the custom remains to this day.” Found this here

button Coma

July 6th, 2010

Okay i stopped saying wow after like 5 mins in this place. Pants and i came to this place called Hammond in town. It is button heaven, i went into a button coma,  i couldn’t even speak. We were there for a few hours and it felt like 5 minutes. Some of the most amazing buttons you have ever seen.  We walked out with one huge bag full of old vintage buttons, old button cards and awesome glass buttons. Yikes i can’t wait to go back again we didn’t even go through a quarter of the stash they have in there. Pants and i want to share the button love look at the next post to see what you can win.

buttons in the U, S of A

I have only just experienced nation wide patriotism in the country i live in, with the crazy happenings of the Soccer World Cup, which is awesome!  I never really understood it (Patriotism), like American’s literally wear their flag on their sleeves. And what makes it even harder for me to understand are these Star spangled bannered buttons. I suppose that’s just America taking it to the next level. Anyway now that i got that off my chest, today i just thought i should share some of the pictures i took in New York of buttons and sewing related things, minus myself and my husband in the mirror, and that’s a whole different kind of self admiration that im not getting into, Tyler?

So I finally did my first Yarn bomb, i am so flippen proud of myself. I know im a n00b but remember all that yarn i bought, well i had to learn how to knit again. So i did Three Yarn Bombs while i was there. The Pink one i did in London on a pole out side a friends house and i was informed that it is still there. My favourite one though is the blue one, on the lady statue which i did in Camden Town, London. Good job to me. The white one was the first one i did in Central Park, New York. So im so happy i left something of mine behind in those awesome cities. I still hope they are there and someone sees them and smiles.  Go look at the flickr group.

3 holed buttons.

I have blogged the three button holes before , but thought it was quite fitting for this weeks theme. The white buttons do look like they have a hole missing where as the blue buttons seem they were made that way. I still think maybe that the white ones are a bit mutated.

old VS new

April 7th, 2010

They just don’t make them like they used to. Sounds like something my Gran would say, but its the truth in this case. The green button is made from Bakelite and the peachy button is made from some cheap crap plastic. They are very similar style of button but the quality is just not the same. Solid vs flimsy, rad vs lame, detailed vs flat… anyway i could go on… conclusion: OLD is BETTER.
